What do you want to do?
Find your computer
Open the saved read in VCM Editor and select Edit > Calibration Details. Record the controller, OS and calibration identifiers alongside the vehicle and transmission.
Check the detected modules and licensing dialog for that vehicle. A transmission name alone does not establish a separate controller or an extra credit charge.
Gen 1 and Gen 2 Mustang and F-150 files need their own identification. The 2015–2017 and 2018–2020 F-150 5.0 use speed-density/MAP strategies. Identify the earlier truck’s sensors and calibration before using Mustang MAF steps.
2018 Mustang GT tuning: Gen 3. This Mustang uses port and direct injection; the automatic is the 10R80. Use the airflow guide for both injection systems and the matching transmission guide for shifts.
2021 F-150 Coyote tuning: revised truck. Identify this truck separately from the 2018–2020 F-150. HP Tuners removed the MG1 upgrade-service requirement for the listed 2021–2023 F-150 5.0 applications in July 2025. Check the exact controller, interface and required software version before buying.
Save the first read as “as-found”; a used car may already have a tune. Reopen it and keep a separate backup before editing.

Mustang GT and F-150 5.0 questions
Do I need credits to read, or only when I write?
Reading a supported controller does not spend credits. Licensing is required before writing. A 2017 Mustang GT 5.0 PCM is listed at 2 credits; a 2018 GT 5.0 PCM is listed at 4. That change follows the model year, not manual versus automatic. For both cars on a new interface, budget 2 + 4 = 6 PCM credits, plus any separately licensed controllers. Check the detected modules and license prompt before spending credits.
Can HP Tuners read my existing custom tune so I can edit it?
A successful read does not establish that a file is editable or factory stock. For example, a used Mustang with a previous tune produces an as-found backup, not proof of stock settings. If the file is protected or fails validation, keep the read and error message. Arrange a compatible starting file with the previous tuner or HP Tuners before writing.
The previous handheld may hold this car’s factory backup. Confirm a supported return-to-stock path and compatibility with the fitted injectors and intake before restoring it. Extra credits do not remove file protection. The getting-started guide covers previous tunes and file recovery.
Why can’t I find a MAF curve for my F-150 5.0?
The 2015–2020 truck uses manifold pressure and a speed-density air model. A logged airflow value does not establish a physical MAF sensor. The correction is to identify the truck’s MAP sensor and active air model, then use the truck airflow procedure. A Mustang MAF histogram is the wrong starting point. Identify 2011–2014 and revised 2021+ trucks separately.
