Getting started with Mopar tuning
Published
You need HP Tuners, a laptop and a stable battery support. Credits license the write. Reading and logging do not spend them.
Full Custom: $249 $199 launch special. Most files in 24–48 hours after the complete read and log arrive; the outside limit is 3 business days.
2005–2014 5.7, 6.1 and 6.4 only. A 2015+ truck or an 8HP is not covered yet. How files are handled.
The first session
- Record the build. VIN, year, engine, transmission, PCM and TCM part numbers, OS IDs, interface generation, VCM Suite build, fuel and every current mod. Note whether the controller is original, swapped or already tuned.
- Scan before you clear. Save the DTCs and freeze frames. Make a warm idle and cruise baseline log. A failing sensor or existing knock is part of the as-found condition. Erasing it first destroys the evidence.
- Read every applicable module. PCM, and the TCM on a NAG1. Save the as-found file twice, in two places. Make a working copy for edits. An old file with a similar name is a comparison, not a recovery image.
- Check the licence dialog. It names the modules and the credits. A second computer is a separate question. Do not assume two credits covers the TCM.
- Write the smallest change. Use the writer option the dialog offers. Do not choose a full write because an old note said it makes changes stick. Keep the laptop powered and the accessories off.
- Prove it. Scan for new faults. Check idle. Repeat the same log. If nothing moved, confirm the right module, file and table before you add magnitude.
Check controller support
HP Tuners lists EGS52 and EGS53. A missing line in an extra-cost TCM table is not proof that the transmission is unsupported. The licence dialog for this vehicle is the answer. Confirm early-hardware write coverage before you quote the job.
Equipment and software
You keep your own HP Tuners licence and interface. What to buy: confirm the current interface, credit and any bench-service bill with HP Tuners before you spend. A 2005–2014 PCM is an OBD read and write. A 2015+ is a different bill, and a 2018+ read needs the cable first.
What to change first
The order matters more than the size of the first change. A spark add on a closing blade does nothing.
- Read and save. PCM and TCM. As-found file in two places. Identify the family from the controller string, not the badge. If the year and the string disagree, stop.
- Log the complaint. The channels in the logging guide. No spark edit from a log with no knock channel. No pedal edit from a log with no pedal channel.
- Fix the request first. Driver demand and the torque intervention, inside the logged region. Then part-throttle fuel, only as far as the trims and the model support. Spark only where knock was quiet.
- Then the transmission. NAG1 in its own file. RFE inside the PCM. Shift speed, pressure and converter inside the bounds on the shift page. Limiters only if they were the request.
- Wide-open fuel last. Only with a wideband in the log. Then repeat the same drive and compare completion, not just the command point.
More details: how the first changes interact
Pedal and torque limits
The pedal asks for torque. The computer opens the blade, sets spark and fuel, then estimates what it made. Raise the region the complaint lives in.
Airflow and fuel
There is no mass-air sensor. MAP, rpm and cam position estimate the air. Do not bend injector data to hide an airflow error.
Spark and knock
Change only cells that showed no knock retard on the fuel in the tank. Low octane stays at or below high octane in every cell. Do not raise knock sensitivity settings to hide a problem.
Transmission
RFE tables live in the PCM. 65RFE numbering is not 545 numbering. Keep a shift-time floor and converter slip at heavy throttle. The NAG1 has its own guide.
Engine changes
A cam changes the engine enough that it needs its own tune, not a bolt-on adjustment. A stock cam keeps stock cam targets. MDS off does not repair a lifter. P0011 and P000A follow a half-done cam file.
When to stop
- A table or axis you cannot explain.
- A neural-net correction you have not verified.
- A transmission table with no definition.
- A 2015+ computer.
- A boosted engine.
Send the file instead of guessing.
Common questions
Do I need a tune on a stock 5.7?
Not for power. If the complaint is a lazy pedal, a soft part-throttle shift or the MDS feel, the file can change how it drives. A stock truck with no complaint can stay stock.
Is a 6.1 the same as a 5.7?
Same controller families, different air and torque. Read the file. Do not copy a 6.1 spark table into a 5.7 because the table names match.
Manual transmission?
No MDS and no shift tables. The engine file still has pedal, spark, fuel and the limiters. The transmission guide does not apply.
Can I send a handheld backup?
A handheld backup is not a VCM Editor read. Send the read. If the only file you have came from a handheld, say so before you send it. We will tell you whether it can be read.
2015 or newer?
The read may happen before a bench service. The write waits on it. A 2018+ read also needs the Smart Access Cable. This hub does not sell a 2015+ write.
Do I need a dyno?
Not to send the file and the log. A dyno is how you verify a change, not how the first file gets written. We do not ask for a street full-throttle pull.
